Massive Gas Explosion Destroys Maryland Office and Shopping Complex

By | AGS, Industry News, Laboratory Control

A powerful natural gas explosion badly damaged a Maryland office complex and shopping center Sunday morning, ripping away part of the facade and exposing twisted metal.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the thundering blast, which occurred at about 8 a.m. It came after authorities said they had evacuated the area around the complex because of a suspected early morning gas leak near the complex in Columbia, Maryland.

Fire crews responded about an hour before the explosion because of a fire alarm that was upgraded to a report of a gas leak in the parking lot, officials said. When fire personnel arrived, they immediately evacuated everyone from the surrounding area and made sure the building was vacant. The subsequent explosion ripped away a significant part of the facade, scattering debris.

“It was so powerful it could be heard in communities many miles away,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball in a statement.

It’s true that some of the best teaching moments are when you make a mistake and learn from it. Please don’t let a gas leak be one of them moments. Take it from us and help take precautionary action. Pictured below is the AGS Mini Merlin, a combined natural gas & carbon monoxide monitor capable of shutting down the gas supply in the event of a gas leak therefore preventing a gas explosion from ever happening. The Mini Merlin has an audible & visual alarm indicating the live PPM levels of each gas and can be used to communicate with BMS/BAS systems as well as fire alarm panels & remote shut-off buttons.

If you are designing any Commercial Projects when a GAS pipe is entering the premises, we have the Safety systems to ensure the building and occupants are safe from any leaks. Carbon Monoxide Sickens 24 at Midtown Church in New York

By | AGS, Industry News

Dozens of people were overcome by carbon monoxide at a church in midtown Manhattan on Tuesday, some pass out. They were loaded into an ambulance wearing oxygen masks, reports CBS2’ Lisa Rozner.

Authorities say the high carbon monoxide levels appeared to be caused by a malfunctioning motor from the stove ventilation hood inside the church community room, where seniors gather every day for Meals on Wheels and activities. Sources say Encore Community Services rents out the basement. They provide meals and activities for seniors and typically feed 200 people a day.

These incidents are unfortunately a common occurrence, every year, at least 430 people die in the U.S. from accidental CO poisoning and approximately 50,000 people in the U.S. visit the emergency department each year due to accidental CO poisoning. AGS have designed & manufactured the perfect solution, the AGS Mini Merlin, a standalone dual gas sensor which on the detection of Carbon Monoxide or any Gas leaks (Nat Gas or LPG) will shut off the Gas to the building protecting the people and the Building from the silent CO.

For less than $500 dollars we can protect your building, restaurant or residence. Giving you peace of mind that any poisonous or explosive gases will be isolated immediately. The TFT color display provides clear indication the dangerous levels of gas detected, life span and remote shut down.

The AGS Mini Merlin is designed to not only to alert the occupant of danger but to actually shut down it down unlike anything else on the market. The problem with off the shelf CO monitors is they are very cheaply made and majority of the time run out of batteries or the internal detector degrades. The Mini merlin is line voltage and has commercial grade detectors complete with alcohol filters for no false alarms. After a 5 year life span the Mini Merlin will alert the occupant that the sensor needs replacing. Another feature is the alarm freeze indication. Example: You call out the fire department to a CO alarm, they have no indication of the Carbon monoxide levels? However the Mini Merlin will keep the alarm levels on the sensor so the fire department or plumber can determine what level of gas has leaked.

Example installations are below:

Pershing Square is a restaurant located on 42nd Street, directly across from New York’s famous Grand Central Terminal’s main entrance. Offering casual American cuisine in a bustling classic bistro environment. AGS has recently supplied and installed our new Mini Merlin controller. The Mini Merlin is a standalone dual gas sensor which on the detection of Carbon Monoxide or any Gas leaks (Nat Gas or LPG) will shut off the Gas to the building. Protecting the Kitchens staff, Diners and the Restaurant Building.

Seminole Tribe Students get new building in Big Cypress FL

South Florida Tribal Students Get New School Building In Big Cypress

Seminole Tribe

The Ahfachkee School on the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Big Cypress Reservation unveiled a new highly developed  building at a ceremony Tuesday.

It’s a renovation project that is technology-focused to a school that was first founded around the 1940s as Big Cypress Day School. The renovation is helping to accommodate a growing student body at the school.
Around 220 students in grades Pre-K-12 are enrolled to start this year, an upward trend. The biggest growth is in elementary enrollment. According to Cain, about 90 percent of the students at the private, tribally-operated school are Seminole, but the rest are from other tribes including, Choctaw, Navajo and Cherokee. Now, as a part of the new building, students in middle and high school at Ahfachkee will have designated “collaboration centers,” for when teachers bring different subjects together for a joint lesson. They’ll have a biomedical lab for STEM-heavy education. And they’ll have flexible furniture to bounce and roll on during class.

American Gas Safety are now protecting the two science laboratories with the Merln 1000SW+i, which controls the Gas, Electric & Water Utilities in the science laboratories. This system has built in connectivity allowing the panel to communicate with the schools BMS and has connections for the buildings existing fire alarm system. The panel can either tell the BMS that the gas is “ON” or “OFF” with the flick of a switch on the internal control panel. The 1000SW+i can also tell the BMS that the panel has gone into “Alarm”, high concentrations of CO2, gas leak detected or that an EM stop has been actuated.
