The New Minnehaha Academy is now protected by American Gas Safety

By | AGS, American Gas Safety, Industry News, Laboratory Control | No Comments

It has been two years since the tragic gas explosion at the Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis. Two staff members were killed in the blast.

The explosion ripped apart the main stairwell, classrooms, parts of the library and the business office. The blast shook the entire building, and the community to its core.

Over the past two years, the rebuilding process has been steady, and now blueprints and plans have become reality. Two black olive trees are already in place in the atrium.

“Trees I think symbolize strength and unity and all of those things that we have been as a community,” said Minnehaha Academy President Donna Harris.

After the explosion, classes were temporarily relocated to the former Brown College campus in Mendota Heights. Graduating students weren’t able to enjoy the new building, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a part of it.

Beams bearing their signatures will serve as a permanent reminder of all the people this school has impacted.

American Gas Safety are honored to supply our Merlin Utility Controllers to provide gas leak detection for the academy, preventing a gas explosion from ever happening by isolating the gas supply if a leak or pressure drop is detected.
The system installed is our Merlin 1000S, which controls Gas within the science laboratories. This system has built in connectivity allowing the panel to communicate with the schools BMS and has connections for the buildings existing fire alarm system. The panel can either tell the BMS that the gas is “ON” or “OFF” or with the flick of a switch on the internal control panel it can tell the BMS that the panel has gone into “Alarm”, gas leak detected or that an EM stop has been actuated. Pictured below is the Merlin 1000S controller installed.

Massive Gas Explosion Destroys Maryland Office and Shopping Complex

By | AGS, American Gas Safety, Industry News, Laboratory Control

A powerful natural gas explosion badly damaged a Maryland office complex and shopping center Sunday morning, ripping away part of the facade and exposing twisted metal.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the thundering blast, which occurred at about 8 a.m. It came after authorities said they had evacuated the area around the complex because of a suspected early morning gas leak near the complex in Columbia, Maryland.

Fire crews responded about an hour before the explosion because of a fire alarm that was upgraded to a report of a gas leak in the parking lot, officials said. When fire personnel arrived, they immediately evacuated everyone from the surrounding area and made sure the building was vacant. The subsequent explosion ripped away a significant part of the facade, scattering debris.

“It was so powerful it could be heard in communities many miles away,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball in a statement.

It’s true that some of the best teaching moments are when you make a mistake and learn from it. Please don’t let a gas leak be one of them moments. Take it from us and help take precautionary action. Pictured below is the AGS Mini Merlin, a combined natural gas & carbon monoxide monitor capable of shutting down the gas supply in the event of a gas leak therefore preventing a gas explosion from ever happening. The Mini Merlin has an audible & visual alarm indicating the live PPM levels of each gas and can be used to communicate with BMS/BAS systems as well as fire alarm panels & remote shut-off buttons.

South Florida Tribal Students Get New School Building In Big Cypress

Seminole Tribe

The Ahfachkee School on the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Big Cypress Reservation unveiled a new highly developed  building at a ceremony Tuesday.

It’s a renovation project that is technology-focused to a school that was first founded around the 1940s as Big Cypress Day School. The renovation is helping to accommodate a growing student body at the school.
Around 220 students in grades Pre-K-12 are enrolled to start this year, an upward trend. The biggest growth is in elementary enrollment. According to Cain, about 90 percent of the students at the private, tribally-operated school are Seminole, but the rest are from other tribes including, Choctaw, Navajo and Cherokee. Now, as a part of the new building, students in middle and high school at Ahfachkee will have designated “collaboration centers,” for when teachers bring different subjects together for a joint lesson. They’ll have a biomedical lab for STEM-heavy education. And they’ll have flexible furniture to bounce and roll on during class.

American Gas Safety are now protecting the two science laboratories with the Merln 1000SW+i, which controls the Gas, Electric & Water Utilities in the science laboratories. This system has built in connectivity allowing the panel to communicate with the schools BMS and has connections for the buildings existing fire alarm system. The panel can either tell the BMS that the gas is “ON” or “OFF” with the flick of a switch on the internal control panel. The 1000SW+i can also tell the BMS that the panel has gone into “Alarm”, high concentrations of CO2, gas leak detected or that an EM stop has been actuated.

Carbon monoxide poisoning at a motel in Canada hospitalized 46 people

By | AGS, American Gas Safety, Industry News, Laboratory Control

Fifty-two people and one dog were evacuated from a Super 8 motel in Winnipeg Tuesday morning after a carbon monoxide (CO) leak was detected in the building.

46 people were taken to hospital for CO exposure, 15 considered to be in critical condition. Everyone had been discharged from hospital as of Wednesday.

“Today’s incident at a Winnipeg hotel was not a gas leak. It was a carbon monoxide poisoning,” Manitoba Hydro tweeted. “CO is produced by the incomplete combustion/ventilation of gas stoves, heating boilers, furnaces, propane barbecues, gas-powered water heaters & clothes dryers.”

Dozens of people have been taken to the hospital after a carbon monoxide leak at a Super 8 Motel in Winnipeg, Canada.

While natural gas has a rotten egg smell that helps with detection, carbon monoxide is odorless. For it to be detected, a carbon monoxide alarm is required which is why you need a CO alarm in your home and business. The initial symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are flu-like, but without a fever. They may include dull headache, weakness, dizziness and nausea. High-level poisoning can result in vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision and loss of consciousness.

The fire service crews detected carbon monoxide throughout the hotel with levels up to 385 parts per million. Normal levels are 0-2 parts per million, according to a bulletin from the Fire Commissioner’s Office of Manitoba. The bulletin notes that exposure between 200 and 400 parts per million can lead to slight headaches, fatigue, dizziness and nausea after two to three hours.

Each year 400 deaths and 20,000 visits to the emergency room are caused by CO poisoning?
Is your boiler room, building and people protected from the silent killer carbon monoxide?
