Protect your Restaurant, Staff and Customers from Carbon Monoxide and Gas Leaks

By | AGS, American Gas Safety, Industry News

Pershing Square is a restaurant located on 42nd Street, directly across from New York’s famous Grand Central Terminal’s main entrance. Offering casual American cuisine in a bustling classic bistro environment. AGS has recently supplied and installed our new Mini Merlin controller. The Mini Merlin is a standalone dual gas sensor which on the detection of Carbon Monoxide or any Gas leaks (Nat Gas or LPG) will shut off the Gas to the building. Protecting the Kitchens staff, Diners and the Restaurant Building.

For less than $500 dollars we can protect your building, restaurant or residence. Giving you peace of mind that any poisonous or explosive gases will be isolated immediately. The TFT color display provides clear indication the dangerous levels of gas detected, life span and remote shut down.

It was only 4 years ago a business owner lost his life from Carbon Monoxide and CO poisoned dozens of diners at Legal Sea Foods in NY https://edition.cnn.com/2014/02/23/justice/new-york-carbon-monoxide-poisoning/index.html

The AGS Mini Merlin is designed to not only to alert the occupant of danger but to actually shut down it down unlike anything else on the market. The problem with off the shelf CO monitors is they are very cheaply made and majority of the time run out of batteries or the internal detector degrades. The Mini merlin is line voltage and has commercial grade detectors complete with alcohol filters for no false alarms. After a 5 year life span the Mini Merlin will alert the occupant that the sensor needs replacing. Another feature is the alarm freeze indication. Example: You call out the fire department to a CO alarm, they have no indication of the Carbon monoxide levels? However the Mini Merlin will keep the alarm levels on the sensor so the fire department or plumber can determine what level of gas has leaked.

South Florida Tribal Students Get New School Building In Big Cypress

Seminole Tribe

The Ahfachkee School on the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Big Cypress Reservation unveiled a new highly developed  building at a ceremony Tuesday.

It’s a renovation project that is technology-focused to a school that was first founded around the 1940s as Big Cypress Day School. The renovation is helping to accommodate a growing student body at the school.
Around 220 students in grades Pre-K-12 are enrolled to start this year, an upward trend. The biggest growth is in elementary enrollment. According to Cain, about 90 percent of the students at the private, tribally-operated school are Seminole, but the rest are from other tribes including, Choctaw, Navajo and Cherokee. Now, as a part of the new building, students in middle and high school at Ahfachkee will have designated “collaboration centers,” for when teachers bring different subjects together for a joint lesson. They’ll have a biomedical lab for STEM-heavy education. And they’ll have flexible furniture to bounce and roll on during class.

American Gas Safety are now protecting the two science laboratories with the Merln 1000SW+i, which controls the Gas, Electric & Water Utilities in the science laboratories. This system has built in connectivity allowing the panel to communicate with the schools BMS and has connections for the buildings existing fire alarm system. The panel can either tell the BMS that the gas is “ON” or “OFF” with the flick of a switch on the internal control panel. The 1000SW+i can also tell the BMS that the panel has gone into “Alarm”, high concentrations of CO2, gas leak detected or that an EM stop has been actuated.

Carbon monoxide poisoning at a motel in Canada hospitalized 46 people

By | AGS, American Gas Safety, Industry News, Laboratory Control

Fifty-two people and one dog were evacuated from a Super 8 motel in Winnipeg Tuesday morning after a carbon monoxide (CO) leak was detected in the building.

46 people were taken to hospital for CO exposure, 15 considered to be in critical condition. Everyone had been discharged from hospital as of Wednesday.

“Today’s incident at a Winnipeg hotel was not a gas leak. It was a carbon monoxide poisoning,” Manitoba Hydro tweeted. “CO is produced by the incomplete combustion/ventilation of gas stoves, heating boilers, furnaces, propane barbecues, gas-powered water heaters & clothes dryers.”

Dozens of people have been taken to the hospital after a carbon monoxide leak at a Super 8 Motel in Winnipeg, Canada.

While natural gas has a rotten egg smell that helps with detection, carbon monoxide is odorless. For it to be detected, a carbon monoxide alarm is required which is why you need a CO alarm in your home and business. The initial symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are flu-like, but without a fever. They may include dull headache, weakness, dizziness and nausea. High-level poisoning can result in vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision and loss of consciousness.

The fire service crews detected carbon monoxide throughout the hotel with levels up to 385 parts per million. Normal levels are 0-2 parts per million, according to a bulletin from the Fire Commissioner’s Office of Manitoba. The bulletin notes that exposure between 200 and 400 parts per million can lead to slight headaches, fatigue, dizziness and nausea after two to three hours.

Each year 400 deaths and 20,000 visits to the emergency room are caused by CO poisoning?
Is your boiler room, building and people protected from the silent killer carbon monoxide?

KFC in ruins after Gas Explosion in North Carolina

By | American Gas Safety

A KFC restaurant in North Carolina was blown to bits early Thursday morning.

At 12:33 Thursday morning, everything was fine. In a flash, the building was gone.

A KFC employee, who was closing the restaurant, told police that he and others could smell gas so the manager tried to turn off the nozzle and called the gas company. Shortly after “there was a huge glare of light and then just debris everywhere” said an unnamed witness.

“I felt it several miles away and I understand it was felt even further away. It was big explosion for sure,” said Mayor Neville Hall. “The gas company is digging up the gas line to make sure the gas line to other businesses in the area are safe. As they do that, they’ll begin to remove the debris to see if they can go in and find the exact spot of the potential leak to determine the cause. It could take several days to get to the bottom of it.”

American Gas Safety provides a simple solution, the Merlin 2000S which is a gas pressure proving & ventilation interlocking system that continuously checks the gas line for abnormalities such as gas leaks and pressure drops. In the event of this occurring, the Merlin 2000S will automatically shut down the gas supply preventing gas explosions like this from ever happening. Our Merlin controllers will detect any Methane leaks and it will also not allow gas into the restaurant without the exhaust hood running. Plus, in the event of a fire can be linked into the Ansul system and Fire Alarm.

Luckily this time nobody was killed, this could of been a whole lot worse.

23 Injured in Explosion at Market on University shopping center Florida

By | American Gas Safety

A vacant pizza restaurant exploded Saturday in a thundering roar at a South Florida shopping plaza, injuring more than 20 people as large chunks of concrete flew through the air.

Firefighters found ruptured gas lines following the blast which flung debris widely along a busy road in Plantation, west of Fort Lauderdale. The restaurant was destroyed, nearby businesses and cars were damaged.

“We thought it was thunder at first, and then we felt the building shake and things started falling. I looked outside and it was almost like the world was ending,” said Alex Carver, a worker at a deli across the street from the explosion. “It was nuts, man. It was crazy.”

The explosion hurled large pieces of concrete up to 50 yards (45 meters) away and sent pieces of metal scattering as far as 100 yards (90 meters) across the street. Carver said two of his co-workers’ cars were destroyed. At least 21 people were injured though none of the injuries was life-threatening, Police Sgt. Jesica Ryan said.

The explosion demolished the building, leaving behind only part of its metal frame. The restaurant, called PizzaFire, had been out of business for several months. The blast also blew out the windows of a popular fitness club next door at the shopping plaza in Broward County.

Jesse Walaschek had just left the fitness club with his wife and three children, ages 4, 6 and 8. They were parked near the restaurant and had just driven about 50 yards (45 meters) away when they heard the blast.

This could have been prevented by installing or specifying a Gas Safety system. At American Gas Safety our main priority is ensuring not only the building is safe from gas leaks but more so the people inside them. Our Merlin controllers will detect any Methane leaks and it will also not allow gas into the restaurant without the exhaust hood running. The Merlin 2000S is perfect for this situation (see pictured below) Allowing key lock authority over the gas supply to the kitchen and auto shut down of the supply if and when dangerous levels of Methane is present. Plus, in the event of a fire can be linked into the Ansul system and Fire Alarm.

Luckily this time nobody was killed, this could of been a whole lot worse.
